The Jade is a charismatic little pub and live music venue built inside a distinguished heritage building in the Adelaide CBD. The vibe here exudes vintage charm, with pastel shaded decor, retro furniture and nostalgic art fittings. The indoor event space has an eye catching central stage, draped with jade coloured curtains that perfectly complement dainty strings of fairy lights. Chairs can be set up alongside rows of shin high lights, creating a captivating aisle for the bride to walk down. With classic chandeliers overhead and an antique piano on the side, this is one of two lovely places available for wedding ceremonies.
The other option is the adorable outdoor beer garden, set against the striking background of St Paul’s church. The rough brick courtyard beautifully offsets decorative greenery and flowers, and the entire area is easy to style with crisscrossing overhead lights. A picturesque archway marks the entrance which makes a great starting point for photographs, especially if the bridal party arrives in a sweet old vintage car.
Glass concertina doors open up to connect the adjoining areas, allowing guests to easily flow inside and out during receptions – the entire venue can be hired exclusively, or certain spaces can be chosen. The light-rimmed area in front of the stage becomes the perfect space for a focal dance floor. A cosy open fireplace will keep guests warm on chilly nights, with big leather armchairs to nestle into with a glass of scotch. Nearby is the bar, where friendly staff serve up craft beers, boutique wines and funky cocktails. The indoor stage has a built-in PA system which is perfect for live entertainment, speeches and announcements.
Up to 270 guests can be accommodated for cocktail style events, or the intimate feel of the venue also makes it a fabulous choice for small weddings and elopements. Cosy candlelit dinners can be designed in pretty windowed nooks overlooking the leafy courtyard, or there is the option to bring in your own choice of external catering. There is plenty of space to set up platter benches, buffets or nibble stations.
The central city location of The Jade makes it convenient for the bridal party and guests to arrive by public transport or to stay within walking distance of accommodation options. Right around the corner is Hindmarsh Square and the popular mini-golf venue with a twist, Holey Moley. Rymill Park, the River Torrens and the Adelaide Botanic Gardens are all close by and handy for outdoor photoshoot options. Rundle Street bars and nightclubs are nearby if guests are keen to carry on the afterparty late into the night.
Established in 2002, The Jade used to be known as The Jade Monkey, located in a 140 year old building on Twin Street. This building once housed the factory for the iconic South Australian baked goods company, Balfour’s – home of the state’s famous Frog Cakes. Despite strong community protests, this building was demolished in 2012 to make way for major hotel development.
With the strong support of the local live music scene, the beloved eclectic venue reopened as The Jade in 2014 on Flinders Street, where it continues to delight today. It often hosts a variety of cultural events including art and music acts during the Adelaide Fringe, proving it is a fantastic choice of venue for something a little different, a little quirky and a lot of fun. Couples looking for a bohemian vibe, a retro feel or classic charm for their wedding need look no further than The Jade.
