The Cedars was built as a colonial-style villa in the 1870s. But in August 1912, Hans Heysen bought The Cedars, and in 1919-1920, the Heysens renovated and updated their home. Since then, the home has changed very little and has continued to gain awareness as one of the country’s most integral and best preserved historic homes.

Today. the homestead welcomes visitors to enjoy the beautiful sights and history of the estate. Tourists are welcome to tour the house and check out the rooms still filled with furnishings, textiles, objects and personal belongings of the Heysen family, and also to view the original works of art by Hans Heysen, Nora Heysen, and other artists represented in The Cedars collection.
